I have put another 50 miles running, 20 miles cycling, 16 hours weeding, and 8 hours framing a basement on my Five Fingers. I have been barefoot running a bit lately or I would have put more miles on them — so I think in total I have around 400+ conservative miles on them now.
The repairs seem to be holding up.

Well sort of – the fabric is gone and so another repair would need to add fabric back over the hole. Or the space would significantly shrink.

The next picture shows new holes on the next toe. Rip is at the base of the rubber. Not sure if this is repairable.

The bottoms are wearing fabulously.

The inside heal cup is now showing some wear.

The five finger kso experience is still producing happy feet

Happy Running,
Michael Carroll
Glad to see they’re holding up! I bought a pair through REI and during my first game of ultimate, the seam on the right big toe came loose
I want to exchange them, but REI’s all out of my size and not taking backorders! Any repair tips?
I just used regular sewing thread. I just made small looping stitches. At first I kind of gathered the rip together with some wide (length of rip) stitches and then made my neat stitches. You can see what I did here: http://redrocksbluesky.com/2009/03/24/repaired-my-vibram-five-finger-ksos/
Good luck.
Hi Michael,
Wonderful to find your blog. Some very nice pictures – you are lucky to have such beautiful scenery to run in. Way to go!!

Here’s a great repair tip! Go to any auto or home repair store and pick up some plasti-dip (manufacturer/name may vary) and brush that over any worn-thru spots on rubber areas. I’ve repaired a few worn/torn spots on soles with it and even reinforced the instep of my hiking boots. Follow the instructions and work in a well-ventilated area (outside preferably), pick up a few really cheap brushes to paint it on… Give it a shot!
Thanks for the repair tips! My boyfriend and I are starting to find some seams come apart as we get more comfortable in them and can handle running faster and faster in the mountains. Just the shoes are starting to have issues. To fix the holes where fabric is missing, we might try Five Ten Stealth Rubber (http://shopfiveten.com/P-6900000000001/Stealth-Paint-Kit). It might help you on the toe areas but we haven’t tried it yet.
Mine ripped/tore a small hole right on top of my right big toe upper during my first run. Not too happy about that but I still really like the experience so I’m going to try to take them back to the store and see what happens. Maybe I’ll get the treks or treksports since the uppers on those seem to be more durable. I originally got the kso’s over the treks and treksports because they’re recommended for more of a variety of activities but there’s no point if they are going to fall apart in a few days.
Rick,
It sucks to have to have em rip. I went over the bars on my mtb and shredded the toe on a pair a few weeks ago. If the rip was your fault, not a product defect, it can be repaired. It just doesn’t look spiffy.
Cheers
